Montegrappa Amerigo Vespucci Limited Edition Fountain Pen ISAVN_SE, 2001

For seventy years, the Italian Navy training ship Amerigo Vespucci has inspired generations of officers at the Livorno Naval Academy, standing as a symbol of pride for the entire fleet. Widely celebrated as the most beautiful vessel afloat, the Amerigo Vespucci is honored by Montegrappa’s exceptional new collection.
The first fountain pen in the Le Signore del Mare (“Ladies of the Sea”) trilogy is an exquisite writing instrument, soon to be joined by editions dedicated to the Orsa Maggiore and the Palinuro—two of the Italian Navy’s other magnificent ships.
The gold model, limited to 267 pieces (matching the ship’s crew), depicts the Amerigo Vespucci under full sail, racing across the waves. This vivid scene, rendered in colored enamel, faithfully reproduces a miniature by British artist Keith Seldon. Behind the ship, a delicate acanthus-leaf motif is achieved through Montegrappa’s exclusive bas-relief engraving technique.
The sterling silver edition, limited to 1,931 pieces in tribute to the ship’s launch year, features the same miniature, but realized in high-relief engraving. The cap, crafted from pearlescent celluloid, is finished in striking white and black—the classic colors of the ship’s hull.
Each pen’s finial is adorned with the “Mariner’s” flag—the cross of the Italian Navy—crafted from sterling silver or 18K gold and finished by hand in enamel. The clip, in sterling silver or 18K gold, is sculpted as a rostral figurehead of Amerigo Vespucci, the Tuscan navigator whose name graces two continents. The cap band is engraved with the vessel’s name, completing the tribute.
The 18K gold nib is platinum-plated and engraved with the AV monogram, as well as a detailed pattern echoing the Vespucci figure. A hand-finished ebonite feeder ensures a smooth ink flow, while a traditional piston-filling mechanism provides ample ink capacity. The pen features a removable screw-on cap and fills via rotation of the barrel end.
Each fountain pen is presented in a mahogany box, styled like a classic maritime instrument case. The lid bears a silver-plated plaque with an image of a legendary sailing ship, and a second plaque inside the lid displays the Montegrappa logo.
With its artistry and craftsmanship, the Le Signore del Mare collection is a fitting tribute to Italy’s proud nautical heritage.
